Near Infrared (NIR) Light Therapy

NIR was first used thousands of years ago to treat skin tuberculosis and to grow plants in outer space. Now they are common at home devices used for skincare treatments.




It is a form of red light therapy that uses a natural wavelength that not only is absorbed by the skin but actually penetrates deeper to the cellular level without harming the epidermis. There is no serious side effects and no pain or heat during treatment. Some people do experience minor detox symptoms in the beginning. The infrared lights are almost invisible to the naked eye, it's mainly the red lights that you see illuminating. The many benefits of NIR include:

Collagen production: collagen is the most common protein found in the body and decreases as we age

It is actually possible to be deficient in this kind of light as these beneficial wavelengths are from the sun. Humans are just like plants, we are designed to get a full spectrum of light. I think using red and near infrared light wavelengths helps bring us back in tune with nature and our exposure to the sun. In today's modern life, we are constantly surrounded by blue light which is disrupting our circadian rhythm and overall health. Essentially, NIR therapy restores cellular health which is the foundation I think everyone needs to start with. When clients come to me for the first time, you can almost guarantee we are discussing their light, water and air as these are the basics we need to optimize before moving forward. You can notice the positive effects of NIR treatment in about 8 weeks of regular use. I recommend doing treatment in 10 minute intervals a few times per week and work your way up to 20 minute intervals everyday. More is not necessarily better here. Ensure you are standing or sitting at least 6 inches away (max 18 inches) to maximize benefits with the least amount of harm.


Dr. Ray Peat states, "Penetrating red light is possibly the fundamental anti-stress factor for all organisms. The chronic deficiency of such light is, I think, the best explanation for the deterioration which occurs with aging.
